How to Perform a Proper Background Check of a Potential Employee

One of our specialties is investigating the background history of potential employees, on behalf of businesses and their managers. Background checks and pre-employment screenings are not uncommon practices. Bringing a new hire into a professional organization is a significant move, as the responsibilities you put on that individual and the commitments he’s expected to make to the company are often high. The effort that goes into hiring staff and the subsequent investment that is made once they have joined the team, means that you want to be 100% sure that the conditions under which they have applied for the position are honest ones. Here is a short list of what we look for when performing such a screening:

  • A major step is to review the frequency of changes in an individual’s employment history. A Significant rate of change in job history is often a sign of problems or a lack of loyalty.
  • Lying on resumes is unfortunately all too common. This is one of the most frequent of dishonest mistakes applicants make. Verifying the information on an individual’s resume should be the first order of business.
  • Large gaps in an individual’s employment history tend to raise red flags. There are often legitimate explanations for such patterns, for instance extended travel or personal projects. If this is the case, more detail should be obtained.
  • Most people will not include a criminal record on their resume, the reason being self explanatory. It is never a bad idea to have a look into the records, to verify that your potential new staff member does not have a criminal history.
  • References should be double checked as well, to verify that they are legitimate and have not been carefully created for the purposes of the application process.
  • Another red flag, surprisingly, are home addresses. Past and present addresses can be tracked; to verify that the individual lived were they say. If this comes up as false, then serious question must be place on why they would lie about such a detail.
  • Along with work experience, individuals may falsely state both their credentials and education. None-existing schools, as well as degrees never earned have been included on resumes. Both these details can be verified through obtainable records.
